Fair and Transparent Elections Bill - 19 March 2024

19/3/24

We've been promised reform on electoral law but so far we've seen nothing. We're concerned that the major parties are doing a deal to reduce political competition and then dressing it up as electoral reform. Now we don't let Coles and Woolies make the laws about competition in supermarkets but we seem to be letting the ALP and the Coalition make the laws about political competition. So we are here today. This week the cross bench in both houses will be presenting a bill that shows that there is a really robust electoral reform package that the government could get through both houses today. We don't need to wait for a deal between the Coalition and the ALP that will potentially reduce political competition. Now in this bill we cover a number of different things. It addresses transparency, real time disclosures and improving definitions. It bans lies and political advertising. It reduces financial influence.
