Top end of the range could deliver for investors and the planet (18 September 2025)

Following the Federal Government announcement of its emissions reduction target range of 62 percent to 70 percent by 2035, Independent Member for Curtin Kate Chaney says she will continue to push the government to be ambitious on climate action that drives investment and protects communities from a worsening climate.

“A target range designed to appease a broad group of stakeholders won’t deliver for the planet or the economy,” Ms Chaney said.

“A 62 percent emissions reduction by 2035 falls short of what the evidence and the experts tell us we need to ensure a stable climate for future generations by limiting warming to 1.5-2 degrees.

“From an investor’s perspective, this is a 62 percent target – investors cannot rely on a commitment to anything higher than that, so including the upper range is meaningless.

“By the government’s own analysis and the advice of the Climate Change Authority, 70 percent is an achievable target. Our policy settings should aim for 70 percent. This would position Australia as a global leader, incentivise more investment and comply with our international obligation to set the strongest possible achievable target.

“After a decade of climate denial and inaction by successive Liberal governments, Australians are ready for bold, decisive leadership to unlock the opportunities decarbonisation offers. Aiming to exceed the 70 percent end of the target range would demonstrate that leadership.

“Treasury modelling shows that transitioning to a cleaner economy provides significant economic benefits for all of us, not to mention the positive outcomes for our health and environment.

“With a target now set, further policy work is needed help us reach this goal: tightening up the Safeguard Mechanism, ending fossil fuel subsidies, and urgently delivering incentives that stimulate private investment in decarbonisation.

“I will work collaboratively with the Government to decarbonise our economy, with a steely focus on a 70 percent emission reduction by 2035.
