Independent Member for Curtin Kate Chaney has criticised the Federal Government following reports it is set to
abandon any plans to ban online gambling advertising, walking away from a key recommendation of the You win
some, you lose more report that was chaired by the late Peta Murphy.
“If Labor refuses to ban online gambling advertising, it will be clear capitulation to vested interested,” Ms Chaney
said.
“Just as the tobacco industry once fought tooth and nail to keep its products on our screens, the gambling lobby is
releasing its own ‘research’ telling Australians the problem lies not with them, but with offshore gambling sites.
“Australians can see through such transparent attempts to distract from the real issue and the harms caused by this
cowboy industry. Our screens are saturated with gambling ads because they work, and Australians are paying the
price.”
Ms Chaney was a part of the parliamentary committee that reached a rare consensus when writing the Murphy
Report. The Report makes 31 recommendations including sweeping reforms to online gambling advertising.
“Online gambling is addictive by design, marketed aggressively, and disproportionately harms young people and
vulnerable communities,” Ms Chaney said.
“Labor’s retreat from gambling reform is a gift to the gambling lobby and a betrayal of families who are already
paying the price.
“This Government has an opportunity to make gambling ads history. Just as we stood up to Big Tobacco, we must
now stand up to Big Gambling.
“If the Prime Minister caves to lobbyists that will be his legacy.”
