Independent Member for Curtin Kate Chaney MP has written to Prime Minister Anthony Albanese to express her serious concerns regarding the invitation extended to Israeli President Isaac Herzog to visit Australia from 8 February 2026.

“I understand the Prime Minister issued the invitation in the wake of Bondi terrorist attack, but I am troubled, as are many in my community, that this visit will only serve to inflame division and erode Australia’s social cohesion,” Ms Chaney said.

“Right now, we should be prioritising the healing and safety of our communities.

“I am also deeply concerned that this invitation has been extended while the Israeli Government faces serious allegations of breaches of international humanitarian law, including sustained warfare in Gaza that has prompted ongoing condemnation. Many constituents have contacted me to share their distress about these breaches.”

Ms Chaney’s letter also outlines concerns about former IDF Major General Doron Almog accompanying President Herzog, questioning whether his presence in Australia may engage our obligations under international law to investigate credible allegations of serious international crimes.

In 2005, a British magistrate issued an arrest warrant for Mr Almog alleging grave breaches of the Fourth Geneva Convention.

“There is a lot of community discontent about the Israeli President’s visit, which is likely to create further division at a time when our primary responsibility as leaders is to maintain social cohesion and the safety of all Australians,” Ms Chaney said.

“Should this visit proceed, I ask, on behalf of my community, that the Australian Government directly and unequivocally address the catastrophic humanitarian crisis in Gaza with President Herzog and call on the Government of Israel to abide by its international obligations and work towards a political resolution based on a negotiated two-state solution.”
