STATEMENT ON THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A ROYAL COMMISSION ON ANTISEMITISM AND SOCIAL COHESION - 9 January 2026

I support the Prime Minister’s decision to establish a Royal Commission on Antisemitism and Social Cohesion, which I called for before Christmas.

A Commonwealth Royal Commission is the most powerful and comprehensive form of independent investigation available and is necessary to understanding the factors that led to the horrifying terrorist attack in Bondi.

I welcome the broadening of the terms of reference beyond antisemitism to include social cohesion, which is an important step in addressing division in our communities.

I hope the findings of the Royal Commission provide a common understanding of these issues, and its recommendations are implemented by the Government to improve community safety, while strengthening respect and compassion for all Australians, regardless of race, religion, culture or background.
